an (un)expected journey begins

I think that traveling can't really be planned. But it you can prepare yourself. Especially when you're going on a gap year. I've started thinking about it when I was 15 or 16. I knew that I wanted to take a break between high school and university. Last year (2016) I went to Scotland with my dad and I fell in love with the country right away. Then I tumbled over WWOOF UK and I decided to give it a start. As I said earlier, I don't know where this will end.

I actually don't want to start with the preparation. I want to start at the actual start. Our journey started on the 4th July. We took a bus from Edinburgh to Dumfries, even though it took 3,5 hours. Travelling in the UK, you should always try to buy a return ticket. Our tickets were about 17 pounds each. Unfortunately it rained so we couldn't see much of the grasslands.

After ariving in Dumfries we took the bus to Beeswing. The owner of the property said that he'd meet us at his shop. I was quite surprised when I saw a huge organic shop with an included café. We met Barry in person and had a soup. Then he drove us down to our home for the next two weeks, the old Solway Fishery. He showed us our room and the first tasks for the following days. We stayed in a quite big room over a shed. It had an included kitchen, a fireplace, a comfortable bed and a sitting area. A bit of a shock for me was that we only had an outside shower. Especially, because it was really cold and wet when we got there. But it should turn out that having a shower close to birds singing and sounds from the nearby forest could easily beat any rain forest showers.

In the evening, we decided to have a walk to explore the whole property. It was a really calm place and we enjoyed the silence. As an old fishery, the place had a huge lake and from time to time you could even see a fish jumping out of the water.
Because the weather was still not the best, Barry's wife picked us up with her car to drive us back to the Organic shop to get some food for the following days. I think I'll write an extra post about the food as soon as possible. After that we had dinner at their house to get to know each other a bit. Being with the hosts felt quite nice from the start, like visiting a family member from far away that you wouldn't see every year. They drove us back after we've watched some Wimbledon, we fell asleep immidietely.
